  • 1st Half of NFL Season Lion Thoughts

Detroit has been one of the big surprises of the 2007 NFL Season. With a 6-2 record the Lions are tied for the 2nd best record in the NFC and no pre-season prognosticators envisioned anything like this for the Lions. Quarterback Jon Kitna said in the pre-season that if the Lions didn’t win at least 10 games the players would be disappointed. He was ridiculed by all the ‘Experts’ on all the NFL talk shows who said the Lions had no hope of winning 10 games. Why are the Lions so much better than everybody expected? Here are a few reasons Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger sees a few reasons for the improvement so far this season:

NFL Week 9 Detroit Lions vs Denver Broncos – Recap

  • NFL Week 9 Detroit Lions vs Denver Broncos – Recap

In a very surprising outcome the Detroit Lions routed the Denver Broncos 44-7 in Ford Field on Sunday. The game was never close as the Lions dominated every phase of the game from beginning until end. Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger said last week that Detroit played its most impressive all around game in beating Chicago. The win on Sunday against the Broncos replaces the Bear win as the most impressive all around performance. Balance on offense with 31 passes and 29 runs for 382 total yards and 30 total offensive points. Thundering hits, see the LB Alex Lewis hit on WR Glenn Martinez, on defense. Detroit with 5 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries with one returned for a TD and the 66 yard interception return for a TD by Shaun Rogers. Special Teams with 3 Field Goals by K Jason Hanson and P Nick Harris with a 48 yard punting average with 2 inside the 20. All in all a most impressive performance. According to Coach Rod Marinelli the Lions play was deserving of a day off for all the players as he gave them off until Wednesday. Detroit is now 6-2 and still 1 game behind the Green Bay Packers for the lead in the NFC North. First half of the NFL season is done and the quality of NFL opponents for the Lions in the 2nd half of the season seem to be much more difficult. Next up for the Honolulu Blue and Silver is a trip to Glendale, Arizona to take on the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.   Coach Marinelli has already started his mantra that the Broncos are in the past and all focus is now on Arizona.

  • Detroit Lions 6-2 after dismantling Denver Broncos 44-7

Firing on all cylinders the Detroit Lions ended the 1st half of their season with an easy victory over the Denver Broncos 44-7. Showing an offensive balance that the Lions have not provided to this point in the season, 31 passes and 29 rushes, and a hard hitting ball hawking defense the game was over early. Denver’s QB Jay Cutler was sacked early in the 2nd quarter by DT Shaun Rogers and left the game with a lower leg contusion and did not return.

Denver Broncos coming off an overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday night travel to Detroit to take on the Lions at Ford Field Sunday November 4, 2007 @ 1:00 on CBS.

  • Lions Offense vs Broncos Defense

Detroit has the 14th ranked NFL overall offense with an improving rushing offense which is up to 26th after RB Kevin Jones was inserted into the starting lineup 2 weeks ago. Denver’s defense is 25th overall and last in defending the run. The strengths of both team is the Jon Kitnapassing game, Detroit led by QB Jon Kitna has the 7th rated passing offense and utilizes pretty equally Wideouts Roy Williams, Shaun McDonald, Mike Furrey and rookie Calvin Johnson. Denver has the 6th best pass defense in the NFL with CBs Champ Bailey and ex-Lion Dre Bly. Kitna has been sacked the most of any QB in the NFL but Denver is only middle of the pack with sacks. Detroit will rely on its offensive line to keep pressure off Kitna so he can avoid sacks and interceptions. Ex-Bronco tackle George Foster will be up against DE John Engelberger to help get the Lions rushing game going taking advantage of the Bronco weakness. Detroit will try and run early and often with Jones and RB T.J. Duckett and move the chains and control the clock. Denver will rely on LBs Ian Gold and D.J. Williams to stop the Lions rushing attack. Detroit has had trouble in the last 4 games scoring TDs once they get in the red zone and offensive coordinator Mike Martz is looking to make adjustments to produce TDs rather than Field Goals by K Jason Hanson.

  • Coach Cullen not Upset with Kitna

Probably you heard about the Halloween costume that QB Jon Kitna wore to a Halloween party on Monday evening. Kitna dressed up as a naked man and his wife Jennifer dressed as a Wendy’s fast food clerk. Kitna was making light of the situation last season when the Lions Defensive Line coach Joe Cullen was arrested for going through a Wendys drive through without any pants on. Cullen had this to say Tuesday when asked if he was upset:

“No, not at all,” Cullen said firmly, shaking his head. “It’s Halloween.”

NFL Week 8 Detroit Lions vs Chicago Bears – Recap

  • NFL Week 8 Detroit Lions vs Chicago Bears – Recap

Photos in article Source: Detroit News

For the 2nd time this season the Lions have won a game on the road beating the Chicago Bears 16-7 in Soldier Field on Sunday. The closeness of the score was not indicative of how much the Lions dominated the Bears.  In fact Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger believes this performance by the Detroit Lions was the most impressive all around game played on the road by this team since the Thursday in October 2000 in Tampa Bay. That season the Lions also moved to 5-2 after the win in Tampa Bay and things looked good for the Lions to make a run to the playoffs. Amazingly just two weeks after that impressive win, the Lions had lost at Indianapolis and then came home and played terribly and got routed by the Miami Dolphins and Coach Bobby Ross abruptly quit the next day. It has been all bad for the Detroiters since then. Sunday was a Quality NFL win on the road against a Quality team. Remember the Bears were in the Super Bowl last year. Now they are 5-2 again and this time they are coming home to Ford Field next week to face the Denver Broncos in Detroit. Following Coach Rod Marinelli mantra of playing the next play, the Lions are only focusing on the Broncos now and the Bears are in the past.
