Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz is Out

  • Martz Confirms he is Out as Offensive Coordinator

Mike Martz in a discussion with the Detroit News Lion Beat writer Mike O’Hara yesterday confirmed that he will no longer be the Lions Offensive Coordinator. Martz was very complimentary of Head Coach Rod Marinelli and thinks the Lions are on the right path. Here are some quotes from the story directly from Martz:

“I’m out — that’s it”

Martz did not say he was fired and when asked if he could have remained with the Lions responded:

“Yeah, probably,” Martz said. “It’s really time for me to move on. I think it’s all good. I went there because of Rod. I think he’s a great man of high character. He’s an excellent head coach. He’s going to do very well.

“I think they’re headed in the right direction. It’s just time for a change. I’ve got nothing but good things to be said about that organization.”

Martz disputed numerous reports that he clashed with Marinelli over how much to run the ball:

“I never had that discussion with Rod,” Martz said. “I think we did what we had to do to try to win games. I think we ended up throwing the ball way more than we liked to.”

  • Jim Colletto New Offensive Coordinator

Jim Colletto the 2007 Offensive Line coach for the Lions will be promoted to Offensive Coordinator for the 2008 Season. Kippy Brown, who was rumored to be in line to be Offensive Coordinator, will be named Assistant Head Coach and Passing Game Coordinator along with coaching the running backs.

The Lions have not confirmed any of the promotions or even if Martz has left the organization.

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger wonders if any changes will be made with the Defensive Coaching staff considering the following indictment of the Lions Defense in 2007:

  • 32nd in Overall Defense
  • 32nd in Points Allowed
  • 32nd in Passing Defense
  • Allowed 70.1% of Passes to be Completed an NFL Record

Detroit Lions 2007 Final NFL Power Rankings

  • Final NFL Power Rankings for 2007

The Detroit Lions Power Rankings are down at the bottom of the NFL teams. After the way the Lions finished the season I am surprised that any of the entities ranked them higher than 31st. Remember the Glory days (after Detroit beat Denver) and everyone had the Lions in the Top 10 with a High Water mark of 7th? With the way the Lions finished the season the NFL Power Rankings for the beginning of the 2008 season will certainly have the Lions near the bottom. The Final NFL Power Rankings by the entities that do the Weekly NFL Power Rankings are here. Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger provided the NFL Power Rankings post as a regular weekly feature during the NFL Regular Season. I used the same 5 NFL Power Rankings sites each week.

Detroit Lions end Season 7-9 with Rout by Green Bay Packers 34-13

  • Lions Routed by Packer Reserves 34-13

With Green Bay having 6 starters inactive for the game to get rest for the upcoming playoffs the Packers reserves routed the Detroit Lions 34-13. Detroit put up almost no resistance. Fox TV Football analyst Daryl Johnston said during the game ‘Detroit shows no signs of being competitive’. For the 5th time this season the Lions looked lost on the road. Detroit was never in the game. Packer QB Brett Favre only played 3 possessions and all 3 resulted in TDs. After the 2nd TD drive Fox showed Favre on the sideline with his teammates having a good laugh about something. I can only surmise that they were finding the Lions defense laughable. That scene reminded me of the 3rd game of the season when Philadelphia exposed the Lions Tampa Two defense to the tune of 56-21. Philadelphia RB Bryant Westbrook said after that game that he hadn’t seed a defense like that since his Pop Warner days.

Detroit Lions Reportedly to Fire Martz

  • Martz to be Fired Reports Los Angeles Times

LA Times has a story this morning detailing that the Detroit Lions will Fire Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz after the Lions end their season in Green Bay on Sunday. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen also reported that the Lions would fire Martz.

The story said the Lions are going to replace Martz with current receivers coach Kippy Brown.

Speculation has that the San Francisco 49ers will pursue Martz to become their Offensive Coordinator and develop QB Alex Smith.

  • Martz’s Swan Song?

Lots of rumbling in Detroit about how Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz will be leaving the Lions after the season. Some say he will resign and others insist he will be fired. One thing everyone agrees on is that the Lions Offense has not performed as well as hoped during the 2007 season. Martz was questioned about his future earlier this week and would not address what the future holds. He did say the offense has improved and is better then last season but not as good as he had hoped. He took full responsibility for the offense not being as good as expected:

Detroit Lions hang on to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 25-20 after jumping out to a 19-0 lead in the 2nd Quarter. • Detroit Lions would Like to Win against Kansas City Chiefs

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger can only say the Lions would like to win this week against the Kansas City Chiefs. NFC Playoff hopes were eliminated with the Minnesota Vikings win on Monday Night. All that is left for the Lions is to try and finish the NFL season with 8 wins and 8 losses.  Detroit ends its season in Green Bay next week trying to win in GB for the 1st since the 1991 season.
