Could the Lions Pass on #1?

There has been a lot of chatter around the media and fans that the Lions could possibly pass on #1 in the upcoming 2009 entry draft.  I personally think that is ridiculous.  The issues that would be created are enough to create a permanent rift with the player drafted.

Reasons to Not Pass:

1. The Lions would be paying the pick the exact money if they wait to draft him between picks 1-5.  The agent of that player (likely Matt Stafford) would be angry and demand the same compensation.

2. Hold out! The player would mostly likely hold out until the comp that he deserves as the #1 was given.

3. Could you think of a worse start for a player who is supposed to be part of the foundation of a team.  It is just like saying “We wanted you but not enough to take you and pay you first overall money.”  That is not the way to get a QB entrenched into a team.

Let’s be clear on the Lions stance.  They have not stated one.  The rumors started when writer Tom Kowalski said it is possible.  Let’s remember that Kowalski also said publicly that “There is a 0% chance the Lions take Matt Stafford at #1.”

I agree with you, it’s unlikely to happen, but I disagree with your 2nd and 3rd points.

If the player does not get drafted first by some other team, then that player was not #1 overall quality.

My guess is that the negotiation, pre-draft would go something like this. Let’s say it’s Matt Stafford that the Lions are negotiating with:

    Martin Mayhew:
Matt we think you have a great career ahead of you as an NFL quarterback, and we’d like you make your career right here with us in Detroit, but you’re only still just three years out of high school, and we’re not prepared to pay you x amount of dollars given the amount of further development you still need.

    Matt Stafford/Tom Condon:
Martin, we feel that Matt really is worthy of the number one overall pick. Yes, he’s young, but that provides him and you an even greater opportunity to develop him and make him the face and franchise of the Lions for many, many years to come. He’s still growing physically, he’s already got one of the strongest arms in the league, and he’s only going to get bigger and stronger in the next couple year.

    Martin Mayhew:
Tom, we agree with you whole-heartedly, but the risk here, given Matt’s short track record is still too great to warrant the type of money that would typically paid to a QB selected as the number one overall pick.

    Matt Stafford/Tom Condon:
Martin, we disagree, we think that Matt is worthy of receiving that salary.

    Martin Mayhew:
Tom, Since we are not prepared to do so, why don’t I give you the opportunity to be drafted by St. Louis at the number one spot. Let the market decide where it is that Matt’s draft value is.

How could you as a player or an agent be genuinely mad about that? Of course, there is theatre involved, but you as a player, would have no basis to be angry.
