There is no curse of Bobby Layne?

Jerry Green of the Detroit News has published an article on how the “Curse of Bobby Lane” never actually happened.  It is worth a read for any enquiring Lions’ fan.

Among those debunking the curse item is Dave Diles. Diles was the Michigan Associated Press sports editor then before switching to television.

“Never heard of it,” said Diles. “I was right in the middle of that story.”

Now Diles — the truth is that he was my mentor at AP — happens to be a magnificent raconteur. He has told plenty of stories about Bobby Layne — the nighttime escapades, assorted other adventures — but never the curse story so prevalent now.

This information will likely put off many of those Lions fans who want to draft Matt Stafford based on the fact that he went to the same high school as the curse layer Bobby Layne.

I for one never heard of the curse prior to the 2008 season.  It is good to know that I am not the only one who was duped by the Bobby Layne myth.  For those who need a reason for why the Lions are so bad: A curse does live amongst the Lions.  It is called the curse of mismanagement.

It is said that WCF Sr was apart of the Bobby Layne(#22) trade to the Steelers for Earl Morrall. Since WCF Sr became sole owner of the Lions, 13 head coaches have never held another NFL head coaching job. Only George Wilson, Bobby Layne last head coach in Detroit went on to hold another head coaching job for the Miami Dolphins expansion team in 1966.

In 1960 Bobby Layne was quoted saying “I’d like to win a championship for the Steelers and for myself to shove down Detroit throat!” After his retirement in 1965 Bobby Layne was quoted saying that his biggest disappointment in his football career was having never won a championship for the Steelers.

The only quarterback to go to the pro bowl since Bobby Layne was Greg Landry in 1971. The same year Chuck Hughes suffered a fatal heart attack running back to the huddle during the final minutes of a game vs the Bears, the team Bobby Layne was drafted by. The Lions had the 9th best win/loss record and were 12th in passing yards that season.

In 1972 Earl Morrall went 9-0 for the Dolphins after Bob Griese broke his leg in week 5(one of the reasons Bobby Layne was traded to the Steelers the following year in ‘58)… ‘72 Dolphins Pefect Season, 22 years after Bobby Layne signed with the Lions. The ‘72 Dolphins upset the Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

Billy Sims was the 1st overall draft pick by the Lions in 1980. During his 5th year he suffered a career ending leg injury and was never hit.

In 1992 the Lions made it to their only NFC Championship game since the 1957 Championship only to get creamed by the Redskins 41-10. The Redskins went on to beat the Bills in Super Bowl XXVI.

In 2005 Dick Jauron (an interim head coach) replaced the Lions 22nd all-time head coach Steve Mariucci. Following the 2005 season the Steelers hosted Super Bowl XL in 2006 at Ford Field against the Seahawks in a 21-14 victory. Dick Jauron never signed a contract with the Lions and went on to become the head coach for the Bills in 2006.

Jon Kitna left in week 5 against the Bears never to return for the Lions and the Lions finished their ‘08 season 0-16.

In 2009 Jim Schwartz was quoted saying “its time to replace Bobby Layne”. Matthew Stafford was the 1st overall draft pick by the Lions in ‘09 and he went to the same high school as Bobby Layne. Matthew Stafford lead his high school team to a Tx state championship. The school’s first State title since 1957, the same year as the Lions last NFL title.

There is no real proof that Bobby Layne said “Detroit would not win for 50 years”. But one think is fore sure… the Lions have never won a Championship from 1958-2008.
