  • Detroit Lions Believe in Now

The Detroit Lions using the NFL marketing theme ‘Believe in Now’ have the slogan plastered everywhere. Probably the Lions are fearful of non-sellouts for the first time since Ford Field opened for the 2002 Season.

Matt Millen in a story in the Detroit Free Press said the Lions fans will like what they see. Millen felt the team is headed in the right direction:

“I think that our fan base is a pretty knowledgeable fan base, so I think they’ll believe their eyes,” Millen said.

“And I think this is a great football town. I’ve said that a million times. So I think the more they can see and the more they get a feel for this group, I think they’re going to like what they see.

“That’s my opinion. So they’ll make their own decisions.”

He also said the Lions have brought in players that fit Coach Rod Marinelli mold:

“We’ll see where that takes us,” Millen said. “I think what it does is, we’re not working against ourselves. We’re not slowing down for the last guy to get on board. What does that mean? I think it speaks to attitude. I think that attitude’s a huge part of it. I always did.”

So it is clear that Matt Millen Believes in Now.

Here are some of the reasons why Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger doesn’t Believe in Now.

  • Offensive Line scheme has changed to zone blocking

This is the scheme that the Denver Broncos employ and running back Tatum Bell gained over a 1000 yards as a member of the Broncos. Like all things it takes a while to learn the scheme and become proficient in it, especially when the practitioners of the new scheme are the Detroit Lions offensive line members.

  • New Offense installed by new Offensive Coordinator Jim Colletto

It always takes NFL teams a number of games to adjust to a new Offense and I expect the same from the Lions adjusting to the new offense. While the Lions are adjusting I expect some losses to occur attributed to these adjustments.

  • Tampa Two defense needs the following to be successful and the Lions don’t have enough
    • Dominate Defensive Line
    • Speed
    • Superior Tackling
    • Playmakers
  • Lions Talent Base is not as good as it needs to be

Too many weak Matt Millen drafts to compete in today’s NFL. Maybe in a few years if Rod Marinelli is allowed to stay on track with drafting his style of player the Lions fans will then ‘Believe in Now’. Until then I am afraid it will be another disapointing season for the Lions faithful and with the economy is such turmoil in Michigan sellouts will be hard to come by for the Lions which means we won’t even be able to watch all the Home games on TV.Detroit Lions training camp starts with the first workout on Thursday morning and usually at this time of the year I am optomistic for a playoff season for the Lions. Unfortunately all that I can see this year is a 3 or 4 win season at best. I sincerely hope I am mistaken but I doubt it.

A world renown Information Technology company that advertises on many televised sporting events has a humorus spot that always make me think of the Lions when I see it. The spots essentially say ‘Stop Talking’ and ‘Start Doing’. I wonder if Matt Millen has seen these comercials?
