  • Middle Linebacker Al Wilson visits Detroit Lions

Ex-Denver Bronco Middle Linebacker Al Wilson visited the Detroit Lions facility in Allen Park on Tuesday. The Lions hope to add Wilson to the Roster to take over the Middle Linebacker spot that was manned by Paris Lenon during the 2007 NFL Season.

Wilson had impressive credentials at Denver during his 8 years with the Broncos.

  • 5 Pro Bowl Selections
  • 2 All Pro Honors
  • 5 Straight Seasons with over 100 tackles, 2002 through 2006
  • 5 Interceptions
  • 21.5 sacks
  • 8 Forced Fumbles

Wilson suffered a neck injury on December 3, 2006 in a game against the Seattle Seahawks during a punt return. Wilson has not played since the injury, sitting out the complete 2007 NFL Season.

Denver attempted to trade Wilson to the New York Giants during the 2007 off season but Wilson failed his physical at New York.

Wilson has just recently been cleared to play again in the NFL by noted back specialist Bob Watkins.

Wilson has speed and can defend the pass well, based on his performance in Denver over the years. He was also a vocal team leader. Seems like he would be a pretty good fit for Lions Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry’s Tampa Two defensive scheme.

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger believes Al Wilson would be a good fit for the Lions Tampa Two defense. He seems to be a punishing run stopper and with good speed to go sideline to sideline as required by the Tampa Two. He also seems very capable of defending the pass which during the 2007 Season was a big weakness of the Lions. But, and there is always a but with the Lions, the injury he is recovering from that caused him to miss the entire 2007 NFL Season concerns me. Hopefully he is fully recovered and the neck will not be an issue and the rest his body received by not playing last season will be a benefit to him. I am hoping the Lions can sign him which would plug one of the holes the team needs to Spackle for the 2008 Season.
Please make your choice for the Lions biggest need in the Draft.
