Detroit Lions near Bottom of NFL Teams

  • Detroit Lions at Bottom of NFL

I saw a story yesterday that showed the worst 5 records for NFL teams since the 2003 Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego. Here are the teams that made up the list:

  1. Oakland Raiders 19-61
  2. San Francisco 49ers 25-55
  3. Detroit Lions 26-54
  4. Arizona Cardinals 28-52
  5. Houston Texans 28-52

Those of you with good memories of course remember that the Oakland Raiders represented the AFC in Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego facing the NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger attended the Super Bowl in San Diego. Going into the game the Raiders were 4 point favorites over the Bucs. I had watched the AFC and NFC Championships in Las Vegas and was certain the Bucs would win easy. Rich Gannon was the Raiders QB and his targets were NFL legend Jerry Rice and Jerry Porter. Bucs coach Jon Gruden had been fired just a year earlier by Oakland after losing the ‘Tuck Rule’ game to New England in the snow. Tampa Bay’s defense dominated the game returning 3 Rich Gannon interceptions for TDs and winning the game easily 48-21.

It has been all downhill for the Raiders with only 19 wins in the 5 seasons since they were the AFC Champions and went into the Super Bowl as the betting favorite. Coach Bill Callahan was fired after the 2003 season when the Raiders finished 4-12.

Even the Detroit Lions beat the Oakland Raiders during the 2007 season in Oakland for 1 of only 2 Road wins by the Lions during the season.

Next Season the Lions will get to try their luck against the 49ers and Texans. The Lions have lost their last 2 matchups with the Arizona Cardinals.

Another thing about that list of the 5 teams. The Raiders franchise has been to 5 Super Bowls and won 3 of them. The 49ers franchise has been to 5 Super Bowls and won all 5.

Lots of work to do for GM Matt Millen to get the Lions away from the bottom of the NFL teams and into Super Bowl contention.

Please make your choice for the Lions biggest need in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Your poll isn’t complete. I wanted to vote for Wide Receiver as biggest need.
