- ESPN Reports Lions DT Shaun Rogers will not be back with Detroit
On ESPN2’s First Take it was reported that the Lions will either trade or release DT Shaun Rogers. The report was by St. Petersburg Times reporter Rich Stroud. The Detroit Free Press is also reporting the same information in a story by Nicholas J. Cotsonika. He talked to Lions spokesman Bill Keenist and here is how Keenist responded:
“Like coach Marinelli said at his news conference after the season, he expects all players under contract to return next year,â€
Â
Cotsonika also wondered in the story how much trade value Rogers would have given his previous 4 game suspension for using a banned substance during the 2006 NFL season. Cotsonika pulled a quote from Lions Coach Rod Marinelli news conference:
“He was a good player for us for nine games,†Marinelli said then. “But it’s the endurance all the way through the season, that’s what I’m looking for.â€

Your Lion Eyes blogger has mixed emotions on this turn of events. On the one hand it sure was frustrating during the Games when Rogers was a non factor and the Lions would get beat easily. This was especially true after seeing some of the games that he dominated and realizing he is a true Pro Bowl talent for the Lions. So part of me says good riddance get somebody that will give 100% effort every play. On the other hand I worry that next year when Rogers is playing for somebody else he will have a great season and leads one of the best defenses in the NFL, while the Lions continue to falter. I guess that will be just another reason for us fans to criticize GM Matt Millen. That will be especially true if Millen gets a 4th Round pick in the NFL Draft for Rogers and Marinelli ends up cutting the selection next summer.
Please make your choice for the Lions biggest need in the 2008 NFL Draft.
