• Martz is New Offensive Coordinator for San Francisco

martz-mike.jpgSan Francisco 49ers have hired ex-Detroit Lion Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz to direct the 49ers offense.

Just like when anybody is hired as a coach or coordinator for an NFL team everything that is said at press conferences is all positive. Martz’s comments were the same.

Here is information I pulled from multiple sources as a result of the 49ers press conference call:

Martz feels the 49ers “are not far from being a good team” and “the offense just needs to pull things together”. Martz views being hired by the 49ers, who ranked near the bottom of the NFL offenses during the 2007 season, “as an opportunity not a challenge” and “the pieces are there it is not like we have to go out and get a bunch of players”. Martz feels the key player in the 49ers offense is RB Frank Gore: “To build that offense around Frank Gore is really exciting”. During the call Martz was asked to compare the 49ers offense to the Lions offense when he was hired by the Lions, here is what he said: “No, no, no. This is much further along. This is totally different. This is not even close to where we were with the Lions. This is a much different situation.”

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger can’t wait until the Lions visit San Francisco next year to play the 49ers. Based on the current state of the Lions defense it seems that whoever is quarterbacking the 49ers will throw for 4 TDs and almost 400 yards and Gore will easily run for at least 150 yards. But maybe the Lions will shore up their Tampa Two defense and be able to stop the 49ers Mike Martz led offense. Lots of teams played the Cover Two against the Lions during the 2007 season and were able to derail the Lions offense.
