  • Final NFL Power Rankings for 2007

The Detroit Lions Power Rankings are down at the bottom of the NFL teams. After the way the Lions finished the season I am surprised that any of the entities ranked them higher than 31st. Remember the Glory days (after Detroit beat Denver) and everyone had the Lions in the Top 10 with a High Water mark of 7th? With the way the Lions finished the season the NFL Power Rankings for the beginning of the 2008 season will certainly have the Lions near the bottom. The Final NFL Power Rankings by the entities that do the Weekly NFL Power Rankings are here. Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger provided the NFL Power Rankings post as a regular weekly feature during the NFL Regular Season. I used the same 5 NFL Power Rankings sites each week.

The 5 were:

  1. Fox Sports NFL Power Rankings
  2. ESPN NFL Power Rankings
  3. Cold Hard Football Facts NFL Power Rankings
  4. CBS Sportsline Power Rankings
  5. Peter King Monday Morning QB - SI

Peter Schrager left the Lions at 25th in the Final NFL Power Rankings. Peter started the Lions at 24th at the beginning of the 2007 season and moved Detroit as high as 9th during the Glory Days. Schrager was not complimentary to the Lions:

The Lions finished their disastrous second half of the season, losing their seventh game in eight weeks on Sunday in Green Bay. Detroit hasn’t won in Green Bay since 1991. Heinous effort out of the Lions, too. No life; no fight; nothing. In other words, typical of the Millen era in Detroit. With most the Packers’ playmakers resting, the Lions couldn’t put the clamps on the Green Bay offense. Brandon Jackson ran the ball 20 times for 113 yards on the beleaguered Lions D. The lesson? Jon Kitna’s not one for predictions. Detroit fell three losses shy of Kitna’s preseason 10-win guarantee.

ESPN NFL Power rankings are developed by ESPN NFL staff writers John Clayton, Len Pasquarelli, Matt Mosley, Jeffri Chadiha and Mike Sando; Scouts Inc. Insider Jeremy Green; and ESPN.com NFL senior editor Mike McAllister.

The ESPN NFL Staff only dropped the Lions down to 24th in the Final NFL Power Rankings. ESPN started the season with Detroit 25th and got them as high as 8th. They quoted Charles Dickens regarding the Lions season and wondered how the Fans still have faith:

To mangle a quote from that noted football genuis Charles Dickens: “It was the best of seasons [a 6-2 start], it was the worst of seasons [a 1-7 finish].” Any Lions fan out there still have faith in this franchise?

Jonathon Comey has the Lions ranked 24th in the Final NFL Power Rankings. Jonathon started the season with Detroit 27th and moved them as high as 7th. Comey points out that the Lions are very bad defensively and set an NFL record for completion percentage given up:

The Lions finished last in the NFL in scoring defense (27.8 PPG). They also allowed 70.1 percent completions, worst in the league by a wide margin and an NFL record to boot.

Pete Prisco put the Lions at 23rd in his Finale NFL Power Rankings. Prisco started the Lions 30th and raised them as high as 9th. He wonders if Kitna is the long term answer:

They have to ask if Jon Kitna is really the long-term answer at quarterback. The defense also has to play better.

King once again did not include the Lions in his Final Fine 15. King started the Lions at 13th which was a big surprise at the time and put the Lions as high as 8th. After a blowout loss by the Lions early in the season he put in his rankings that the Lions were frauds. Wonder what he thinks now after 5 blowout losses during the 2007 season.
