• Lions Routed by Packer Reserves 34-13

With Green Bay having 6 starters inactive for the game to get rest for the upcoming playoffs the Packers reserves routed the Detroit Lions 34-13. Detroit put up almost no resistance. Fox TV Football analyst Daryl Johnston said during the game ‘Detroit shows no signs of being competitive’. For the 5th time this season the Lions looked lost on the road. Detroit was never in the game. Packer QB Brett Favre only played 3 possessions and all 3 resulted in TDs. After the 2nd TD drive Fox showed Favre on the sideline with his teammates having a good laugh about something. I can only surmise that they were finding the Lions defense laughable. That scene reminded me of the 3rd game of the season when Philadelphia exposed the Lions Tampa Two defense to the tune of 56-21. Philadelphia RB Bryant Westbrook said after that game that he hadn’t seed a defense like that since his Pop Warner days.

The complete organization should be embarrassed by the showing put on the field by the Lions on Sunday. Consider the results Sunday of the other teams that had their NFL Playoff spot locked in like the Packers and played their starters for a half or less:

  • Dallas lost to Washington 27-3
  • Seattle lost to Atlanta 44-41
  • Tampa Bay lost to 31-23
  • Indianapolis lost to Tennessee 16-10
  • Pittsburgh lost to Baltimore 27-21
  • Jacksonville lost to Houston 42-28

Notice a pattern there? Only the Packers were able to win a game with backups playing extensively against a team with starters playing the entire game. In fact the Packers played their 3rd QB Craig Nall for almost 3 full Quarters and he moved the ball easily against the Lions porous Tampa Two defense. Packer RB Brandon Jackson had his career best 113 yards running the ball.

After last season’s 3-13 record Coach Rod Marinelli fired Defensive Coordinator Donnie Henderson and it appears that after this season’s 7-9 slate he is going to fire Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz. This Lions team is no better than last year’s team. Yes the record is better this year but after the finish to this season the Lions are back to being a laughingstock by the National media. Remember last year after beating Dallas on the road in the season final they had something to build on. Now after essentially 6 road routs and seemingly no ability to play NFL caliber football away from Ford Field the Lions are one of the worst teams in the NFL. I can not think of 1 NFL team that the Lions would be expected to beat if the Lions had to go to that team’s stadium to play.
