• Season’s Bottom Falls out with 51-14 Defeat by San Diego

For the 4th time this season the Detroit Lions were routed while playing a road game. The San Diego Chargers were ahead early in the 2nd period 27-0 and coasted to a 51-14 victory. Here are some items that indicate how thoroughly the Chargers dominated the Lions in this game. Detroit previously lost at Philadelphia 56-21, at Washington 34-3 and at Minnesota 42-10. This doesn’t even take into consideration the 31-21 loss at Arizona that was not as close as the score ended up.

  • Time of Possession - San Diego 41:32, Detroit 18:28
  • San Diego gained 274 yards running the ball 53 times
  • San Diego scored on their 1st 7 offensive possessions
  • San Diego forced 6 turnovers, 5 interceptions and 1 fumble
  • San Diego scored 27 points off the Lions turnovers
  • QB Phillip Rivers completed 67% of his passes and had a QB Rating of 101.7
  • Pro Bowl Running Back LaDainian Tomlinson only played in the 1st half, because of the big lead, and rushed for 116 yards on 15 carries, 3rd team RB Darren Sproles led all rushers with 25 carries and 122 yards

There is some good news though:

  • QB Jon Kitna was not sacked during the game
  • Lions NFC Playoffs hopes are still alive, though just barely

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger has a recommendation for Matt Millen for the upcoming 2008 NFL Draft:

  • Do not Select another Wide Receiver #1

Of the 4 #1 picks used for Wide Receivers since 2003 only Roy Williams has been to the Pro Bowl. Charles Rogers and Mike Williams were busts and Calvin Johnson has been hampered by a back injury and lately the drops. The Detroit Lions need improvement in so many areas, including offensive line, defensive line, Linebackers and Defensive Backfield. Please use the 2008 draft to shore up those areas.

Come back tomorrow when I have the complete game recap for the San Diego game with all the stats.
