  • Detroit Loses 28-27 in Last 18 Seconds

What can only be termed a crushing defeat the Dallas Cowboys after trailing all day beat the Detroit Lions 28-27. QB Tony Romo marched the Cowboys 83 yards in the last 2 minutes of the game to the game winning TD. On the Final drive the Lions once hit Romo as he was back to pass and Romo fumbled and it appeared the Lions would recover. Lion LB Paris Lenon could not come up with the ball and the Cowboys recovered and were faced with a 4th and 6. Romo was not to be denied and completed a 1st down pass and then continued to complete pass after pass until he hit TE Jason Witten with a 16 yard TD pass to win the game. The Lions played well throughout the game, especially offensively. With a balanced attack, 32 running plays and 36 passing plays, Kitna drove the ball well against a strong Cowboy defense.

Unfortunately an old bugaboo doomed the Lions to lose this game. Detroit was just 2 of 5 inside the Red zone scoring 2 TDs and settling for Field Goal attempts on the other 3 occassions. And the worst of all with a chance to put the Lions up by 9 points that would give Detroit a more than a TD cushion, K Jason Hanson missed a 35 yard attempt with under 11 minutes to go in the game. It was only Hanson’s 12th missed kick from under 40 yards yards during his career, but 3rd this season.

Here was the #1 team in the NFC and the Lions let them escape Ford Field with a win to move their record to 12-1. Dallas seems headed for the Super Bowl and all I can think about is Detroit had them beat and gave them the game. A very disappointing finish I am sure for all Lion fans. The level of play by Detroit was so much better than the previous 4 weeks when the Lions lost with the exception of Special Teams play. The Lions gave up another long kickoff return and then resorted to ‘pooch’ kicks giving Dallas good field position the remainder of the game. Detroit could have gotten back to leading the NFC last playoff spot by virtue of the Playoff Tiebreaker over Minnesota. This was a game Detroit should have won and at the end of the year the Lion fans will look at this game and say if we only would have beaten Dallas. Especially if Detroit loses a NFC playoff spot because of a tiebreaker.

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger was of course disappointed but I can tell you that as a Lion fan you come to expect these types of losses. So many opportunities to beat the best team in the NFC and get back into the Playoff Race yet somehow the Lions lose. Three games left in a season that started so well and now has degenerated into a 5 game losing streak with little relief in sight. Tomorrow I will have all the details of this extremely disappointing loss and all the stats.

I have been referencing the Alanis Morissette Isn’t it Moronic Lion Parody all season. If you are a Lion Fan and were back in the late 80s and through the 90s you will remember most of the Lion items she sings about. I always laugh whenever I hear it, but then I remember that the Lions actually made the playoffs every other year back then. This parody is brought to you by WDFN in Detroit. Just click the audio box below. You will probably have to increase the volume on your speaker.
