  • Detroit Lions benefit from NFL Week 12 Playoff Contender Losses

The Detroit Lions got an NFC Playoff Reprieve when all the NFC teams in competition with them for the last NFC Playoff spot lost on Sunday. If any of the 3 teams directly behind the Lions would have won on Sunday, Detroit would have fallen out of the 6th spot in the NFC playoff race based on tiebreaker formulas. Even the team directly ahead of Detroit in 5th place the New York Giants got routed. Sunday’s NFL Week 12 results included:

  • San Francisco 3-8 defeated Arizona 5-6 - 37-31 in OT
  • Tampa Bay 7-4 defeated Washington 5-6 - 19-13
  • New England 11-0 defeated Philadelphia 5-6  - 31-28
  • Minnesota 5-6 defeated New York 7-4 - 41-17

That leaves the NFC Playoff race, with 5 games left, looking like this:

  1. Dallas NFC East leader 10-1
  2. Green Bay NFC North leader 10-1
  3. Seattle NFC West leader 7-4
  4. Tampa Bay NFC South leader 7-4
  5. New York 7-4 1st Wildcard
  6. Detroit 6-5 2nd Wildcard

Other NFC teams in the Playoff race include:

  1. New Orleans 5-6 who beat Carolina 31-6 on Sunday
  2. Arizona 5-6
  3. Minnesota 5-6
  4. Washington 5-6
  5. Chicago 5-6 who beat Denver 37-34 on Sunday in Overtime
  6. Philadelphia 5-6

So, the Lions get that NFC Playoff Reprieve and get to stay in the Final NFC Wildcard position until at least next Sunday. Detroit travels to the land of 10,000 lakes on Sunday for a NFL Week 13 battle with the Minnesota Vikings.

Good breakdown Michael, still hope for the Lions!

Hi Joe, thanks for the comment. With Detroit’s schedule there is minimal hope, but usually by this time of the year they are long eliminated. December will be here soon and the Lions are still in the Playoff hunt. Surprising.
