Detroit came out strong early but could not sustain the momentum and fell to the Green Bay Packers 37-26. After the 1st Quarter that was statistically dominated by the Lions the Packers took control and dominated the final 3 Quarters. Detroit did score 2 late TDs to make the score look respectable but the game was never in doubt after halftime. Detroit did venture into Green Bay territory on 9 of 12 possessions including 6 of 7 in the 1st half. Too many penalties, dropped passes and sacks of QB Jon Kitna held the Lions to only 9 first half points. Green Bay scored 17 points in the 2nd Quarter when the Lions defense could not stop the Packers passing game. Green Bay, in the 1st half, only rushed the ball 4 times for 7 yards but QB Brett Favre completed 15 of 21 for 184 yards and a TD. On the last 2 possessions of the 1st half and the 1st 2 possessions of the 2nd half Favre completed a Packer record 20 straight passes. All Playoff talk for the Lions will now cease. Detroit will be tied for the last NFC Wildcard spot after Week 12 completes. The Lions are at a tiebreaker disadvantage because of earlier loses to Arizona, Philadelphia and Washington in the NFC playoff race. After a fine 6-2 start the Lions have lost 3 games in a row and have a brutal final 5 games on their schedule. Next week they go to Minnesota, where the Lions are zero for the millennium, then come home to play the Dallas Cowboys. A trip to the West Coast follows to face the San Diego Chargers then back home for the Kansas City Chiefs before they end the season with a trip to Green Bay. The last time the Lions won in Green Bay was………1991. So long ago Brett Favre had not started his consecutive game streak yet, in fact he was a backup for the Atlanta Falcons then. The Lions have never beaten the Packers in Green Bay with Brett Favre at QB. Detroit will be in Minnesota next Sunday to play the Vikings.

1st Quarter

Detroit started the game with the ball and just like the last game agains the New York Giants ran the ball 9 of 11 plays and moved crisply down the field. Running Backs Kevin Jones, T.J. Duckett and Aveion Cason all carried the ball. QB Jon Kitna completed the only 2 passes he threw and faced a 3rd and 5 at the Green Bay 8 yard line. Kitna hit WR Shaun McDonald with a pass and McDonald fought down to the 1 yard line for a 1st and goal and the Lions looked to take an early TD lead. Unfortunately a penalty was called on the play, an illegal chop block on C Dominic Raiola took the Lions back to the Packers 23 where they faced 3rd and 20. Kitna was sacked on 3rd down by DE Aaron Kampman and K Jason Hanson kicked a 47 yard Field Goal to give the Lions a 3-0 lead. The Lions drive was nearly 8 minutes. Detroit moved the ball 80 yards before the penalty and sack pushed them back. Green Bay started their possession on their own 33 after the kickoff by the Lions. On the very first play QB Brett Favre fumbled as tripped trying to hand off to RB Ryan Grant. Lions DE Jared DeVries recovered for the Lions at the Packer 25. RB Kevin Jones gets only 2 yards on 1st down and after 2 QB Jon Kitna incompletions K Jason Hanson comes on for a 41 yard Field Goal to make it 6-0 Lions. At this juncture Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger had a bad feeling. Detroit had what seemed to be a great chance to be up 14-0 and instead settled for 2 Field Goals and the Packer offense had only been on the Field for 1 play. I thought the Lions had wasted a couple opportunities. Green Bay’s 2nd possession is a quick 3 and out and Detroit gets the ball back when the Packers punt. QB Jon Kitna directs the Lions back into Packer territory helped by a nice 23 yard Jon Kitna Sacked by Packersrun by RB Kevin Jones. Facing a 3rd and 3 at the Green Bay 32 Kitna is sacked again by Aaron Kampman pushing the Lions out of Field Goal range. Green Bay gets a nice punt return from CB Charles Woodson out to the Packer 46. QB Brett Favre completes a pass on 1st down for 8 yards but follows with 2 incompletions and the Packers punt. Detroit runs 1 play before the end of the 1st Quarter. Detroit leads 6-0 at the end of 1 Quarter of Play.

2nd Quarter

Aaron Rouse InterceptionDetroit has 2nd and 7 from their 23 when QB Jon Kitna tries a long pass over the middle to WR Calvin Johnson that is intercepted by S Aaron Rouse. Rouse returns the ball all the way to the Lions 11. Green Bay takes just 4 seconds and 1 to score a TD on a pass from QB Brett Favre to WR Greg Jennings. Green Bay takes the lead 7-0 less than a minute into the 2nd Quarter. Detroit again mixes some runs in with a couple passes and moves the ball back past midfield and QB Jon Kitna has a 3rd and 5 at the Green Bay 39. Kitna can not connect with WR Calvin Johnson and the Lions are forced to punt. Green Bay starts at the 20 and QB Brett Favre completes 5 out of 6 pass attempts to get to 1st and goal at the Lions 5 yard line. RB Ryan Grant takes a handoff from Favre and powers into the endzone and a 14-6 Packer lead. RB Aveion Cason returns the kickoff and looks like he might return the Lions back into the game as he breaks into the clear and seemingly is headed for the endzone when he is caught from behind by CB Tramon Williams. Detroit has the ball on the Packer 24 with a chance to close the gap and gain some momentum. Ater an incompletion and a short run QB Jon Kitna is sacked on 3rd down by DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. K Jason Hanson comes on to add another Field Goal and it is now 14-9 Packers. Green Bay provides a 3 and out and punts the ball back to Detroit. The Lions get one 1st down and move to the Packer 46 before having to punt. Green Bay starts with the ball at their own 2o and runs 1 running play by RB Ryan Grant before the 2 minute warning. QB Brett Favre then completes 7 straight passes to get the Packers down to the Lions 2 yard line. Green Bay ends up settling for a Field Goal by K Mason Crosby from 20 yards and the 1st Half ends with the Packers leading 17-9.

3rd Quarter

Green Bay receives the kick to start the 3rd Quarter. QB Brett Favre moves the Packers 80 yards in 7 plays with 7 straight completions to a TD and a 24-9 lead just 3 minutes into the 3rd Quarter. Detroit’s 1st possession of the 3rd Quarter is another possession where they move the ball into Green Bay territory. Some runs by RB Kevin Jones and a couple short passes and QB Jon Kitna has a 2nd and 11 at the Packer 37. Kitna throws a short pass to RB T.J. Duckett who runs 15 yards to a 1st down at the Packer 22, but, a penalty on Guard Stephen Peterman takes the Lions back. Another False Start penalty later in the drive makes the Lions settle for another Field Goal, this time a 52 yard kick by K Jason Hanson to make it 24-12 Packers. QB Brett Favre leads another 80 yard TD drive with 4 more completions and a 31 yard run by RB Ryan Grant and the Pack is up 31-12. Favre has completed 18 straight passes since midway through the 2nd quarter. Detroit puts together a 3 and out and punts back to Green Bay. QB Brett Favre completes another pass to make it 19 straight as the 3rd Quarter ends and the Packers lead 31-12 at the beginning of the 4th.

4th Quarter

QB Brett Favre throws his 20th straight completion to his favorite target of the day WR Donald Driver. Driver takes a short pass and turns it into a 41 yard completion taking it all the way to the Lions 4 yard line. On 1st and goal Favre throws a pass that WR Koren Robinson catches in the endzone for what would have been Favre’s 21st straight completion but Robinson only gets 1 foot inbounds and the play is ruled incomplete. After a running play doesn’t get into the endzone Favre throws his 2nd straight incompletion and the Packers settle for another 20 yard Field Goal by K Mason Crosby. Packers now lead 34-12. Detroit starts with the ball on their own 25 and QB Jon Kitna moves the ball down the field quickly with passing to WR Calvin Johnson and with 1 pass to WR Roy Williams. Kitna completes the drive with a 6 yard TD pass to Calvin Johnson. Calvin Johnson TD PackersGreen Bay leads 34-19 with a little less than 10 minutes left to play. Green Bay cooperates with a 3 and out and the Lions fans are hopeful of a Thanksgiving Day miracle. QB Jon Kitna hits 2 straight passes to WR Calvin Johnson to get the ball to the Packers 30. On 1st and 10 from the 30 Kitna throws to the endzone for WR Shaun McDondald and pass interference is called on Safety Atari Bigby, giving the Lions 1st and goal from the 1 yard line. RB Kevin Jones runs the 1 yard and the TD cuts the Packer lead to 34-26 with 6 1/2 minutes left in the game. Green Bay starts from their own 20 and QB Brett Favre moves the Pack down to the Lions 8 yard line. Favre completes a couple passes good for 25 yards and RB Ryan Grant runs 5 times 47 yards and K Mason Crosby kicks his 3rd Field Goal this time from 26 yards and the Packers extend their lead to 37-26. Detroit’s final possession goes nowhere and Kitna is sacked on 2nd down to put the Lions in a 3rd and 25 predicament. Kitna completes a pass on 3rd down but on 4th and 13 from the Lions 28 throws an incompletion and the Packers take over on downs. Favre kneels down once and the game ends Packers 37-26.

Final Score Green Bay 37 - Detroit 26.
