Detroit suffered a defeat that might end up as crippling blow to the Lions playoff hopes as the New York Giants beat the Lions 16-10. In essentially a must win game for both teams the Giants ended up controlling all but the last 5 minutes of the game. Detroit scored a TD late in the game to cut the Giants lead to 16-10 and had the ball twice more in Giant territory but were unable to cash in. New York now has the lead for 1st NFC Wildcard spot by 1 game over Detroit plus have the tiebreaker by winning this game. Detroit leads the NFC 2nd Wildcard by 1 game over Philadelphia, Washington and Arizona, but each of those teams beat the Lions and own the tiebreaker over Detroit. Detroit’s running game was non-existent with 11 carries for just 25 yards. Detroit had trouble containing New York RB Brandon Jacobs especially trying to tackle him. The Lions turned the ball over 4 times. Detroit’s special teams had a Field Goal blocked and gave up 2 long kickoff and 1 long punt returns. Detroit suffered another replay ruling that in Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger’s humble opinion made a big difference in the game at the time. The ruling on the field was a Detroit 1st down near midfield. The replays shown on TV did not show conclusively that WR Shaun McDonald was down by contact. Referee Tony Corrente ruled that McDonald was down by contact and the Lions were forced to punt. New York proceeded to drive 80 yards to a TD to end the half and leave the field with a 10-0 lead. Now I am not saying the Lions would have driven to a TD or Field Goal, but at the very least would have ran some more time off the clock and not left enough time for the long TD drive the Giants executed. This loss to the Giants was consistent with other Lions losses this season as the Lions were guilty of turnovers, sacks allowed, penalties, lack of running game and the Giants won the Time of Possession battle.

Detroit will play the Green Bay Packers on Thursday November 22, 2007 @ 12:30 at Ford Field in the Traditional Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit.

1st Quarter

Detroit started the game with the ball and ran the ball 4 straight plays with RB Kevin Jones gaining 5, 8, 2 and 4 yards. On 3rd and 4 from their own 46 QB Jon Kitna throws complete to WR Mike Furrey for 2 yards and the Lions are forced to punt. New York starts on their 19 and gets one 1st down before punting back to Detroit. The Lions end up with a 1st and 20 at the 10 after a face mask penalty and QB Jon Kitna completes 2 passes and has the Lions out to the 43. The drive stalls when Kitna throw 2 incompletions and Kevin Jones is stuffed for no gain. Detroit punts back to the Giants and the ball goes out of bounds on the Giants 9 yard line. QB Eli Manning starts the drive with a short pass to RB Brandon Jacobs who breaks a couple tackles and turns the play into a 34 yard gain to the 43. Continuing with that pattern Manning throws 2 more short passes that Detroit had trouble tackling the receivers and now New York has 1st and 10 at Detroit’s 32. On 2nd and 13 RB Brandon Jacobs has a nice run again breaking a tackle or two and gains 18 yards and another 1st down yards at the Lions 17. Detroit again gets one 1st down and then appears to have another on a 3 and 3 reception by WR Shaun McDonald at the 50 when the call on the field is reversed and Detroit again punts to New York. The Giants start at their own 20. After an 18 yard run by Brandon Jacobs and an 11 yard pass to TE Jeremy Shockey New York has the ball at mid-field. On 3rd and 4 Manning goes back to WR Sinorice Moss for a 1st down at the Lions 34. Manning managing the clock very well Brandon Jacobs TDcompletes 3 passes to get a 1st and 10 at the Lions 10. With 30 seconds left in the half Manning hits RB Brandon Jacobs in the left flat and Jacobs powers his way the 10 yards into the endzone and a 10-0 lead for the Giants. Detroit gets one last possession and it ends when WR Shaun McDonald fumbles at the Giants 34 after receiving a pass and the Giants recover ending the half. Giants 10-0 at the half

New York starts the 3rd Quarter with a 3 and out and punts to Detroit and the Lions start with the ball on their 33. QB Jon Kitna has an 8 play drive with 7 passes and 1 run to get the Lions to the Giants 24 before the drive stalls. K Jason Hanson is good on a 42 yard Field Goal and the Giant lead is 10-3. Detroit lined up to try and get the 1st down is called for a False Start by G Edwin Mulitalo. K Jason Hanson attempts a 52 yard Field Goal that is blocked by the Giants DT Fred Robbins. New York starts on their own 42 and QB Eli Manning moves the Giants down to the Lions 28. During the drive RB Brandon Jacobs leaves the field with what is reported as a hamstring injury and does not return to the game. The drive stalls at the Lion 28 and K Lawrence Tynes is good on a 46 yard Field Goal to make the score Giants 13 - Lions 3. After returning the kickoff to the 18 the Lions QB Jon Kitna completes a pass to WR Mike Furrey for a 1st and 10 at the 38. On 1st down Kitna attempts a pass to WR Roy Williams that Williams gets his hands and the ball is tipped up in the air and intercepted by FS Gibril Wilson at New York’s 45. Manning gets a 1st down as the 3rd Quarter ends. New York 13-3 at the end of the 3rd.

4th Quarter

With a 1st and 10 at the Detroit 42 Manning continues the drive mixing short passes and Jeremy Shockey dragging 4 Lionsruns and gets the ball down to the Lions 14 and faces a 3rd and 13. Manning hits TE Jeremy Shockey with a short pass in the flat and Shockey has 4 Lions bring him down just short of the 1st down marker. K Lawrence Tynes kicks a 19 yard Field Goal to make it Giants 16 - Lions 3. Detroit starts with the ball at the their own 22 and Kitna hits WR Roy Williams for a 1st down at the 50. After 3 successive incompletions the Lions punt the ball back to the Giants who takeover at their own 8. New York uses over 4 minutes to move the ball 25 yards before punting back to Detroit. Kitna moves the Lions 82 yards in 4 plays with completions to wideouts Mike Furrey for 9 yards, Shaun McDonald for 14 yards, Troy Walters for 19 yards and a TD completion to Calvin Johnson for 35 yards. Johnson using his leaping ability and his 6′5″ frame caught the ball over the Giant CB 5′8″ Kevin Dockery. With 4:34 left in the 4th Quarter the Giants lead is cut to 16-10. New York starts with the ball on their own 27 and use 2 minutes to put together a 3 and out. After the punt Detroit starts at their own 32. On 2nd down New York DE Justin Tuck is penalized 15 yards by Referee Tony Corrente for ‘intentionally going at the quarterbacks legs’ and the Lions have a 1st down at their own 49. QB Jon Kitna throws a long pass down the left sideline in the endzone for 5′10″ Shaun McDonald that is intercepted by SS 6″3″ James Butler for a touchback. New York has the ball with 1:54 remaining and after 2 Detroit timeouts Manning faces a 3rd and 10 from their own 20. Manning attempts a pass that is incomplete and the Giants punt to Detroit who start their final drive on the Lion 32. After a False Start penalty on T Jeff Backus Kitna completes a 27 yard pass to WR Shaun McDonald and a short 3 yard pass to RB Kevin Jones. On 2nd and 7 at the Giant 43 he throws again to WR Shaun McDonald and the ball hits the wide open receivers hands just above his head and bounces up in the air and is intercepted by CB Sam Madison.
