- Detroit drops to 6-3 after suffering from road woes and Arizona easily wins 31-21
Looking like a completely different team the Detroit Lions lost badly again on the road, this time to the Arizona Cardinals 31-21. Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger predicted yesterday that the Cardinals would win 31-27 in a close game. The game was not really close and this is the 5th straight time the Lions have lost to the Arizona Cardinals in Arizona. Here is how futile it was for the Lions:
- QB Jon Kitna sacked 4 times, pressured relentlessly, hit numerous times
- Kitna threw 2 interceptions
- Lions lost 3 fumblesÂ
- Only ran the ball 8 times with 49 passes
- Total rushing yardage for the Lions was negative 18
- Lots of penalties, 10 for 70 yards including 3 by T George Foster before he was benchedÂ
- 4 straight Arizona possessions after the 1st quarter, when the Cardinals didn’t turn the ball over, that ended with Cardinal TDs: in other words no punts by the Cardinals until they had a 17 point lead
- Lots of injuries, CB Fernando Bryant looked serious, S Gerald Alexander, CBs Keith Smith and Travis Fischer all returned to game
- 3 times the Lions failed to get 1 yard running the ball, needed for a 1st down, twice on 3rd and 1 and once on 4th and 1
- Special teams coverage was not nearly as good as it has been recently
- Screen pass defense was exploited for a long gain when the game was still close
- After taking an early 7-0 lead Detroit turned the ball over and then had 4 straight 3 and outs and Arizona scored 17 points to end the 1st half and essentially the game
- Detroit only had two 1st downs in the 1st half
- Arizona dominated Time of Possession, 1st half especially, 21:17 to Detroit 8:43
Â
Lion Coach Rod Marinelli had this to say after the loss:
“Now this team needs to look straight ahead,” Marinelli said. “If we spend too much time worrying about this loss, then it stays with you. You get knocked down, you get up.
“We’ll dust ourselves off, get back to the details, and we’ll stay focused.”

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger is always amazed the Lions can play so well one week, and seem to be headed in the right direction, and be so bad the next. Essentially the Lions lost a game most Lion fans expected them to win. 85% on this blog’s poll picked the Lions to win. ESPN experts and Fox Pre-game hosts picked the Lions to win. Callers to the sports talk radio shows all week picked the Lions to win because they were not the ‘Same old Lions’. This week I expect the callers will be hard on the Lions. All the Playoff and Super Bowl and home field advantage talk from last will be replaced with complaining fans saying ‘Same old Lions’. WDFN will be playing Alanis Morrissette’s ‘Isn’t it Moronic’ Lion parody numerous times.
Detroit comes home now to play the New York Giants who also lost on Sunday to the Dallas Cowboys. Both teams will be looking to get back on the winning side at Ford Field on Sunday. Â
Tomorrow come back and I will have the complete game recap with all the game stats.
Cast your vote in this weeks Poll, Please.

Sorry guy, I thought the Lions would win in AZ, now I don’t know. I think they hear the Packers footsteps. ^^
PackerBacker, thanks for the comment. I always thought the Lions would lose in Arizona, but I thought they would play better. If the Lions are a true playoff contender it is all there for them with 3 out of the next 4 games at home, vs the Giants, Packers and Cowboys. Hope you come back next week to give me your thoughts about the Thanksgiving game.
