  • Detroit Lions 6-2 after dismantling Denver Broncos 44-7

Firing on all cylinders the Detroit Lions ended the 1st half of their season with an easy victory over the Denver Broncos 44-7. Showing an offensive balance that the Lions have not provided to this point in the season, 31 passes and 29 rushes, and a hard hitting ball hawking defense the game was over early. Denver’s QB Jay Cutler was sacked early in the 2nd quarter by DT Shaun Rogers and left the game with a lower leg contusion and did not return.

Detroit’s defense caused 4 more turnovers this week and turned 2 of them into touchdowns. One of the defensive touchdowns came on one of those plays that earlier this season caused the Lions defense lots of trouble, a screen pass. Backup QB Patrick Ramsey was under lots of pressure and appeared to throw a blind pass that Shaun Rogers picked off. Rogers, showing remarkable quickness, sprinted 66 yards to the endzone including a stiff arm to a potential Bronco tackler that allowed him to cover the last 10 yards to paydirt.

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger has seen many of these types of games over his long career as a Lion fan. I could not believe that the other team is the one that had 4 turnovers, 12 penalties, at least 8 dropped passes, couldn’t score when they had 1st and goal at the 5 yard line. I am so conditioned to look for a flag after a key 3rd down completion by the Lions that each time the Lions made a big play I was just waiting for the flag. I can’t tell you how many times after an incompletion by the opposition the Lions would be called for pass interference or illegal contact and the drive would continue. Now that stuff is happen for the Lions instead of against them. Only 2 penalties with all the big hits by the defense and all the shifting by Martz’s offense seems amazing to me.

Once again the NFL post game shows discussed at length the surprising Lions and how they are looking like a potential playoff team. I will say it again, Playoffs? Playoffs? are you kidding me? Playoffs? Next up is the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale Arizona next Sunday and another road test for the Lions. Start of the 2nd half of the NFL Season that of course we hope will be just as fun as the just completed 1st half. Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger certainly did not foresee a 6-2 record at this point. Detroit’s 2nd half schedule is full of very difficult challenges, New York Giants,  Green Bay Packers twice,  Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers.

As always there are just a couple minor things that I feel that I must bring to your attention.

  1. New York, Green Bay and Dallas all have beaten Philadelphia and we know what happened when the Lions played the Eagles.
  2. Green Bay and New York both beat Washington.

Check back tomorrow when I have the complete game recap and all the game stats.

One last thing, Minnesota looks like they are happy the Lions did not draft RB Adrian Peterson last April. Head over to Minnesota Vikings and read all about the NFL record breaking day he had.
