- NFL Week 7 Detroit Lions vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Recap
Photos in article Source: Detroit News
It was a victory and the Lions will happily take it and start thinking ahead to next week when they travel to Soldier Field in Chicago to challenge the Bears. Detroit is now 4-2 and only 1 game behind the NFC North leading Green Bay Packers. To get a win in the NFL is certainly not easy and they are cherished by the fans of this organization as the Lions strive to become a quality NFL team.
Detroit came out in their Alternate Black Jerseys for the game vs Tampa Bay. The Bucs started with the ball and on the 1st possession the Lions sacked QB Jeff Garcia twice.
Turns out one of the sacks by the Lions didn’t count as it was overruled by replay ruling saying it was a pass and the fumble that came with the sack didn’t count either. Didn’t matter after 3 and out the Bucs lined up to punt and quickly the Lions blocked the punt and were deep inside Tampa Bay territory for their 1st possession. Detroit starts with 3 straight RB Kevin Jones runs for a around 18 yards and the Lions seem in good shape. On 3rd and 4 QB Jon Kitna goes to throw a pass and misfires. The officials rule it a fumble and the Bucs pick it up and return it to the Lions endzone for what looks like a quick lead. The Lions challenge and the play is overrulled and after all the delays the Lions K Jason Hanson kicks a 34 yard Field Goal. The Lions are up 3-0 over the Bucs. The Bucs 2nd attempt against the Lions defense is moving the
ball well with short passes and strong runs by RB Earnest Graham. The Bucs get near midfield when Graham and Garcia mess up a hand-off and the Lions DT Shaun Rogers recovers the ball and the Lions have the 2nd chance at the Bucs defenders. The drive starts with a pass to WR Roy Williams and then another to WR Calvin Johnson to move to inside the 20. RB Kevin Jones then gets carries the next 2 plays and runs 17 yards on the 1st carry and into the endzone on the 2nd carry. Lions are up 10-0.
Tampa Bay gets the ball back and puts together a long drive with runs and short passes mixed in to a touchdown and cuts the Lions lead to 10-7. The Bucs put together a 9 play 81 yard drive that lasts 5:03 and spans into the 2nd period. Detroit on their next time with the ball quickly goes three and out and has to punt back to the Bucs. QB Jeff Garcia leads a nice time consuming drive down the field again with runs and short passes mixed in. The drive ended with no points as the Bucs K Matt Bryant missed a 40 yard Field Goal. Detroit got the ball back and QB Kitna puts together a quick efficient drive to a K Jason Hanson 42 yard Field Goal to make it 13-7 Lions as the half ends. Tampa Bay QB Jeff Garcia ended the 1st half with 18 straight completed passes a Buc team record. Tampa Bay controlled the clock and gained most of the yards in the 1st half: Time of Possession Tampa Bay 21:45, Detroit 8:15. Total Net Yards Tampa Bay 247, Detroit 126.
Detroit starts with the ball in the 2nd half and they do not start well with a three and out and sack of QB Kitna by the Bucs. Tampa Bay starts with a run and then QB Garcia drops to pass and he is sacked for the 2nd time by DE Dewayne White. On 3rd and long an incomplete pass is thrown by Garcia to end his completion streak of 18. Three and out for the Bucs and the Lions get the ball back. QB Kitna leads a drive with RB Kevin Jones and RB TJ Duckett pounding the line to move the chains and some passes mixed in. The drive ends in a K Jason Hanson 32 yard Field Goal making it 16-7 Lions. Tampa Bay now puts together their best drive of the day with Garcia again mixes short passes and run leading a 79 yard drive down to the Lions 1 yard line. Disaster hits now for the Bucs as Garcia fumbles the snap and the Lions fall on it for their 2nd turnover and ends the chance for the Bucs to cut the lead to 3. Detroit now takes over at their own 7 and starts with a couple RB Kevin Jones runs for 9 yards and the Lions are faced with a 3rd and 1. Kitna rolls out and looks to hit a quick pass but it is covered so he runs and he goes airborne and gets hit pretty hard and makes the 1st down by literally inches. From there the Lions mix in runs and passes and get to a 1st down at the Bucs 32. Kitna runs a fake
hand off to Kevin Jones and hands to WR Calvin Johnson on an end around. Johnson stiff arms one tackler, sidesteps another and turns on the speed and rolls into the endzone to give the Lions what seems to be an insurmountable lead 23-7 with just over 6 minutes remaining in the game. The Bucs got the ball after the kickoff and moved down the field using the same method that worked all day, short passes and some runs mixed in. QB Jeff Garcia completed a TD pass to WR Maurice Stovall. Now the score is 23-13 Lions and the Bucs go for and miss a 2 point conversion. Detroit misses the onside kick and the Bucs have the ball back at the 2 minute warning. Detroit’s defense keep the Bucs to a 48 yard Field Goal attempt by Matt Bryant who is true and with just over a minute remaining it is 23-16 Lions. Another onside kick attempt by the Bucs fails and the Lions run out the clock and leave Ford Field with a 23-16 victory.
