Detroit Lions 3-2 vs Tampa Bay Bucs 4-2

Sunday Oct 21, 2007 @ 1:00 Ford Field, Detroit

Tampa Bay travels to Detroit so the Bucs can take on the Lions at Ford Field.

  • Lions Offense vs Bucs Defense

Detroit’s Offensive Line, with Tackles Jeff Backus and George Foster, must be able to keep QB Jon Kitna from being sacked and rushed when he attempts to pass. Tampa Bay will try and get pressure from DEs Kevin Carter and Greg Spires. The Lions NFL rated Mike FurreyRoy Williams5th Passing Offense, with WRs Roy Willliams, Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald going up against Tampa Bay’s 8th best pass defense with CB Ronde Barberand S Jermanine Phillips. The Bucs are 7th in the league with interceptions, 2nd in fumbles recovered and 3rd in total Turnovers generated. Detroit’s offense is near the top in both fumbles lost and interceptions and lead the league in having their QB sacked. RB Kevin Jones gets the start and will try and get the Lions horrible rushing game to gain some yards against the not as good as past years Bucs rushing defense. Tampa Bay’s defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin will have the Bucs in the Tampa 2 which will give the Lions difficulty if they can not run the ball and protect Kitna. Most likely the Bucs will try and get pressure on with only the 4 defensive lineman and leave 7 back in coverage. This alignment worked very well for both Philadelphia and Washington when they routed Detroit earlier in the season.

  • Bucs Offense vs Lions Defense

Tampa Bay with its Jon Gruden version of the West Coast offense does not have glowing stats thus far into the season, they are NFL ranked 25th overall and 22nd passing and 19th rushing. QB Jeff Garcia with WRs Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard with go against the Lions poorly ranked pass defenders SS Kenoy Kennedy and CB Fernando Bryant. Rushing the ball could be difficult for the Bucs with all the injuries to their running backs. Tampa Bay will use RB Michael Bennett, acquired from Kansas City this week,  some to perk up the rushing attack. Detroit does defend the run much better at home so expect tough Boss BaileyErnie Simsgoing for the Bucs. Detroit is vulnerable to screen passes and play action passes. The Bucs have not used play action passes as part of their offense but do dump off to the backs often. Detroit will need good play from LBs Boss Bailey and Ernie Sims to stop the dump off passes.

Thoughts from the ‘Lions Eyes’ Blogger
Tampa Bay will come in just like Philly and Washington with a Cover Two and dare the Lions to run the ball. I am thinking the Lions will be a little successful with RB Kevin Jones getting most of the carries. Also I believe the Lions will be able to protect Kitna better this week as the OL is getting healthier after the bye week. I do expect a close game with Tampa Bay Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin able to throttle the Lions passing game for the most part. But in the end the Lions survive a close game, probably with a Ford Field turnovers, and will be on the winning side. If they do they will be on their way to respecatbility.
