Detroit Lions 3-2 vs Tampa Bay Bucs 4-2

Sunday Oct 21, 2007 @ 1:00 Ford Field, Detroit

TV: Fox Network Ron Pitts, Tony Boselli, Jennifer Hammond

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger is hoping that this game is the beginning to becoming a Quality NFL Team for the Detroit Lions. The Lions will be at home after a disasterious road trip to Washington two weeks ago. Tampa Bay is a little beat up and is struggling with their running game with ‘Cadillac’ Williams and Mike Alstott out for the season and Michael Pittman out for a few weeks. The Bucs traded for RB Michael Bennett on Tuesday and he should see some action against the Lions. Detroit probably will be re-invigorated after Coach Rod Marinelli gave the team 5 days off during the bye week. Reports out of practice this week so far have been positive. Reports are that RB Kevin Jones with start and WR Calvin Johnson is back to good health after the bye week. In fact neither Jones or Johnson are on the Injury Report put out by the Lions. If the Lions can win then, the confidence returns to the players and who knows how the rest of the season will turn out. But, if they lose, it is probable the doubts will return and the schedule looks daunting from here on out. Seems like I say the same thing each game for the Lions, ‘this is a must win’. So much so that I am probably just crying wolf but it does me good to feel like the Lions have a must win game. Ex-Lion QB Jeff Garcia brings the Bucs to Ford Field looking to keep them in 1st Place in the NFC South and move them to 5-2. Jeff had a few things to say about his time with the Lions in 2005, and maybe things would have been different if he had been injured in the last pre-season game, during a Conference Call on Wednesday:

“I just feel like I could have grabbed hold of the team in a different way at an earlier stage in the season. I feel like I could have done some things. And not taking away from Joey (Harrington), because I think he played as hard as he possibly could and tried to do as much as he could from his own abilities and knowledge of the game to try to create success on the field, but we just are different. We have different styles. We have different approaches. And I just feel like I could have offered some things in a different way that …

“Who knows what would have happened? But I’d like to think we could have been competitive and we could have created winning opportunities and that could have started earlier in the season. I hate to even speak about the past, because you just … you’re creating scenarios in your head. It didn’t happen. It didn’t work out that way. When I did come back, I had the two starts, one in Cleveland and then Chicago at home. And unfortunately it was just too soon, and I tried to battle through it because I wanted to be able to contribute to the team. I wanted to be able to be out there on the field and try to help the team win football games, and it just wasn’t meant to be.”

I know the record, and some of the play this year hasn’t shown it, but the Lions still scare me more than anyone in the NFC.
If this team could start hitting on all cylinders, they would be pretty tough to beat, and would potentially look about like the Patriots do right now. They definitely have the skill players to run up 49 points a week.

Kurt, thanks for the comment. My concern with the Lions were magnified when the Packers beat the Redskins just a week after the ‘Skins destroyed the Lions. Don’t see much chance of the Lions beating GB twice like they have to if they hope to overtake the Pack.
