- NFL Week 5 Detroit Lions vs Washington Redskins - Recap
Complete domination by the Washington Redskins is the only way to recap the game. Washington wins 34-3 and could have had more points but for a turnover on the Lions 10 in the 3rd quarter. Here is what Lion Coach Rod Marinelli thought of the performance:
“The defense has got to stop them, and then the offense has to get first downs,” Marinelli said. “We were terrible on both sides of the ball in terms of third down. It’s tough to win if you’re not getting off the field on third down and if you’re not (converting) third downs.”

The Redskins 1st possession of the game a bad direct snap, to RB Clinton Portis, on 3rd and 5 from the Lions 29 lost 11 and caused a Punt instead of at the very least a Field Goal attempt. Detroit’s 1st possession ended with a sack of QB Jon Kitna and a Punt. Washington’s 2nd possession ended with a Punt. Detroit’s 2nd ended the same way as the 1st with another sack of Kitna and a Punt. Here is where the game turned at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. The Redskins put together an 80 yard march, to a TD, taking 14 plays and using 7:44 of the clock. Washington was successful on 3 of 3 3rd down plays. Redskins lead 7-0. After another Lions punt Washington puts another drive together.  This drive consisted of 7 plays 83 yards and taking 3:59 of the 2nd quarter. Detroit was successful stopping a 3rd down play on this drive that led to a 4th down and 2. Washington chose to go for a 1st down instead of attempting a long Field Goal. QB Jason
Campbell threw a quick slant pass to WR Antwaan Randle el for about 2 yards and Randle el avoided a tackle and was able to take the ball to the Lions 1 yard line. Randle el injured himself on the play and did not return. To that point Randle el had caught 7 passes for 100 yards. On the next play FB Mike Sellers ran for a 1 yard TD to make it 14-0 Redskins. Detroit had 2 more and Washington had 1 more possession before the end of the 1st half and neither team moved the ball. Here is a look at how dominating Washington was in the 1st half.
- Time of Possession: Washington 22:46, Detroit 7:46
- First Downs: Washington 15, Detroit 4
- Total Offensive Plays: Washington 41, Detroit 19
- Total Net Yards: Washinton 236, Detroit 41
- QB Comparison: Washington Jason Campbell 16 for 19 171 yards 1 TD, Detroit Jon Kitna 5 for 11 33 yards 0 TD and 2 sacks and 2 fumbles
Detroit starts with the ball in the 2nd half and after an initial 1st down running, QB Jon Kitna fumbled but the Lions recover. The drive stalls and the Lions punt. Washington drives to the Lions 30 and attempt a 48 yard Field Goal that is missed. The Lions put together their only scoring drive of the game, helped by a pass interference penalty on a play when the Redskins had intercepted a pass from Kitna. Detroit ends up kicking a 39 yard Field Goal by Kicker Jason Hanson to make it 14-3 Washington. The Redskins next
drive is a 3 and out for the 1st time all game and after a long Punt, Detroit starts with the ball at the 8 yard line. Kitna is sacked in the End Zone on the 2nd play for a Safety. Washington now leads 16-3. Washington moves the ball well, after the Lions kick off following the Safety, but RB Clinton Portis fumbles and the Lions recover on their own 10 yard line. Detroit does not move the ball and punts. WR James Thrash returns the punt to around the Lions 25 when he is hit and fumbles forward to the Lions 3 where the Redskins recover. On 1st down QB Jason Campbell throws a TD pass to FB Mike Sellers and the Redskins tack on a 2 point conversion on a pass to TE Chis Cooley for a 24-3 lead with less then 11 minutes remaining in the game. Detroit’s next possession
starts ok with a couple 1st downs. Then Kitna is sacked again settingup a 3rd and long he throws a pass that is intercepted by S Sean Taylor and returned 35 yards to the Lions 29. Washington ends up settling for a short Field Goal and the lead is 27-3. Detroit gets the ball after the Kick off and after one first down Kitna throws a pass to the sideline that is picked off by CB Carlos Rogers. Rogers runs easily into the End Zone for a 61 yard interception return TD.
Final Score Washington 34 Detroit 3.

Detroit heads to the bye week at 3 wins and 2 loses and will review the films and figure out what went wrong (everything) and how to fix it. After some rest and recovery time they will turn their focus to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who visit Ford Field next during NFL Week 7.
It will be interesting to check the NFL Power Rankings out tomorrow and see how far the NFL experts have dropped Detroit after their 2nd straight road blowout to an NFL East team. Come back tomorrow and see where the Lions end up.
