- Detroit Lions fall to 3-2 after Washington Redskins win Easily
If you are a longtime Detroit Lions fan like your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger than nothing about this game surprised you. Washington thoroughly dominated the game. In my NFL Week 5 Prediction post I predicted the Redskins would win 34-17. So, I over estimated how successful the Lions offense would be. Redskin Coach Joe Gibbs improved to 12-0 versus the Lions including playoff games. Washington controlled the ball for 34:35 to the Lions 25:25. Detroit’s QB Jon Kitna was sacked 5 times and fumbled 2 times and once fell down in his own endzone for a Redskin Safety. Detroit was unable to generate any offense with their #1 NFL Ranked Passing game. Kitna was 16 for 29 for 102 yards and 2 interceptions. Washington was able to pressure Kitna without the use of any blitzes.  The Lions offensive line could not keep the Redskin defensive front four off of Kitna. The pressure lead to so many sacks and fumbles, the Safety and an interception returned for a TD. On third down the Lions were 1-10 which led to many punts and 1 Field Goal. Defensively the Lions had much difficulty stopping Redskin QB Jason Campbell as he was successful on 23 of 29 passes for 248 yards and 2 tds. The Lions defense had no sacks and Campbell really never had to move once he dropped back in the pocket.
Here is how Longtime Detroit Lions beat writer for the Detroit News, Mike O’Hara, saw the outcome in his story on Sunday Morning.
Pawn the silver. Bet the rent money.
Steal the grandkids’ money out of the cookie jar.
Bet the Lions to beat the Washington Redskins on Sunday at FedEx Field.
It isn’t the lock of the millennium, but I make the Lions over the Redskins — getting 3 1/2 points — the best bet this week.

I would have thought with O’Hara being through all the seasons as the beat writer, he would have known better. I was very surprised when I saw he was picking the Lions to win. Â
Just another futile trip to Washington and now the Detroit record in Washington falls to 0-21 since 1939. I thought a couple weeks ago after the debacle in Philadelphia that Detroit could not play any worse, now I am not so sure. This game was certainly worse offensively and almost as bad defensively. Just a brutal game to watch for any Lions fan.
I am sure on WDFN on Monday afternoon you will hear the Alanis Morrissette Lion parody ‘Isn’t it Moronic’ numerous times.
Now the Lions go into the bye week standing at 3-2 and one game behind the NFC North front running Green Bay Packers. After the bye week the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with ex-Lion QB Jeff Garcia come to Ford Field to take on the Lions.
I trust Lion Coach Rod Marinelli will work with the team to put this game behind them and work harder to become a Quality NFL Team. Probably Marinelli will blame himself for not preparing the team to play better on the road.
Here is an interesting item for you as a Lion fan to think about. The Lions have been outscored by two NFC East teams, Philadelphia and Washington 90-24. The Lions still have to Play the other two NFC East teams the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowbows. The Giants have beaten the Eagles and Redskins. Dallas has beaten the Giants. How can we have any hope for the Lions in those upcoming games? With the Lions futility at protecting QB Jon Kitna he should probably call in sick when the Lions meet the Giants after seeing the 12 sacks they garnered in the game against the Eagles.

my lions are back! losing is the only way we know and understand.
The Bears pulled it out against the Packers leaving the Lions still only 1 game out heading into a bye week.
hard to complain about that.
James, thanks for the comment. I just couldn’t believe the number of ‘Lions Fans’ that actually believed the Lions were going to win the game. You know what they say: ‘Those who ignore history are doomed…… to have the Lions take the day off when you bet on them’
I can’t say i am shocked they lost, but I am surprised the offense was stifled as much as they were this week….
Joe, thanks for the comment. Yes they were stifled and have been recently. They have only scored TDs in 1 of the last 10 quarters. Scoring 34 in the 4th quarter against the Bears other than that they have only a field goal against Washington and a field goal against the Bears.
