Here is what Rod Marinelli said about the game at the post game press conference:
“This game was probably like me, Ugly.”
Source: Detroit Free Press
He was sure right. This game was full of ugly and unbelievable things. Consider the following:
- Bears Fumbled 5 times but didn’t lose any
- Lions Fumbled 4 times and lost 2 and 1 of those in the Red Zone
- Bears threw 3 interceptions 1 was returned for a TD and the other 2 were both in the Red Zone
- Bears QB Brian Griese was Sacked 6 times
- Lions QB Jon Kitna was Sacked 6 times
- Bears were flagged for 14 penalties for 102 yards
- Lions were penalized 9 times for 59 yards
- Lions had a Field Goal and an Extra Point blocked
- Bears had a Field Goal blocked
- Lions had a 1st down after a completed pass, but the receiver tried to get more yards and gave ground on the play, and ended up being tackled short of the 1st down and the Lions were forced to punt
- 3 Plays were reviewed and 2 were reversed including 1 that ended up as a Lion TD
- 4th Quarter took over an hour to play with all the scoring and kickoffs
- Lions scored an NFL record 34 points in the 4th Quarter
- Both teams combined for an NFL record 48 points in the 4th Quarter
- Bears after cutting a 10 point lead to 3 with less than a minute to play tried on onside kick that the Lions fielded and returned for a TD
Detroit scored 1st after DT Shaun Rogers blocked a Field Goal attempt by Chicago’s Robbie Gould. Detroit returned the block into Bear territory and a 15 yard penalty was added on. The Bears pushed the Lions back 4 yards and forced Jason Hanson to kick a 49 yard Field Goal. The Lions would not score again until the beginning of the 4th period. Detroit did threaten early in the 2nd when it looked like they were going to have 1st and goal after a 3rd down run by RB Tatum Bell but Bell fumbled and the Bears recovered. Chicago put a TD on the board late in the 2nd quarter when QB Brian Griese completed a 15 yard TD pass to WR Muhsin Muhammad. That play completed a 9 play 71 yard drive. At the half the Bears led 7-3.
Chicago added 2 field goals in the 3rd period by Robbie Gould to increase the Bears lead to 13-3 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Detroit was driving when the 3rd ended and scored on the 1st play of the 4th quarter when QB Jon Kitna threw a 4 yard TD pass to Shaun McDonald, finishing a 4 play 70 yard drive. Bears lead is cut to 13-10. On the very next Bear possession and less than 2 minutes later on a 3rd down and 5, Griese threw pass that was intercepted by CB Keith Smith who returned it 64 yards for a TD. Lions take the lead 17-13. Detroit’s lead didn’t last for even 18 seconds as Bear return man extraordinaire Devin Hester, who was very dangerous returning kicks and punts all day, returned the Lions kickoff 97 yards to the end zone to put the Bears back in front 20-17. To this point in the 4th quarter there has
been only 2:03 run off the clock and 21 points have been scored. Detroit received the kick off and started a 5 play 80 yard drive that ended with Kitna throwing a 15 yard TD pass to WR Troy Walters. The officials ruled the play an incomplete pass and the Lions challenged. For the 1st time this year Coach Rod Marinelli won a replay challenge and the Lions once again led 24-20. Chicago can not
gain any yards on the next possession and the Lions get the ball back after the Bears punt. The Lions put together what appears to be a game clinching 8 play 62 yard drive with Kevin Jones running 5 yards into the end zone. The extra point was blocked by the Bears so the Lions lead is 30-20. Chicago puts together a 12 play 73 yard drive to a Griese 1 yard TD pass to Desmond Clark with less than a minute to play. Just before the Bears scored it appeared once again the Lions had clinched the win. Griese was sacked while attempting to pass and his arm going forward and the ball flew to an offensive lineman who caught it and started running was tackled and fumbled and the Lions recovered in the end zone. Once again the replay needed to be viewed and the officials determined that the action was a fumble not a pass. Therefore that late in the game a fumble could not be recovered by the offense and advanced. The ruling was the Bears did recover but the ball would go back to where Griese fumbled. So the fumble by the Bears lineman didn’t happen. So after all that it is now Lions 30-27 with just :52 seconds to play. Chicago tries an onside kick that bounces to Casey Fitzsimmons who catches it and runs untouched 41 yards to the end zone to end the scoring. Final Score Detroit 37 - Chicago 27
After one quarter of the season the Lions stand 3 and 1 and are getting some National notice by the ‘Experts’, not that National notice ever does any good for the Lions. Detroit now will start getting ready for their 21st trip to Washington D.C. The Lions fans hope that this trip turns out better than the previous 20 trips to play the Redskins. The Lions have never won in D.C.
