- Detroit Lions vs Chicago Bears NFL Week 4 - Preview
Lions vs Bears Ford Field Sunday September 30th, 2007 @ 1:00.
TV: Fox Network with Dick Stockton, Brian Baldinger and Jennifer Hammond.
Streaks: Bears have won the last 4 matchups.
Chicago Bears travel to Detroit to meet the Detroit Lions Sunday @ 1:00 at Ford Field. Both teams come into the game after a loss in Week 3. Detroit was routed by Philadelphia 56-21 and Chicago was beaten soundly 34-10 by Dallas.
- Lions Offense vs Bears Defense
Detroit comes into the matchup with the NFL’s #1 ranked passing offense and 3rd overall. Chicago’s injury hampered defense rated 16th overall and 23rd against the pass. Lions WR Calvin Johnson was injured last week in Philadelphia and has not practiced this week and probably won’t play. Bears look to be without CBs Charles Tillman and Nathan Vasher in their defensive backfield. The Lions will often times lineup with 4 Wide Receivers to put pressure on the perceived
Bears weakness. Keep in mind the Eagles put so much pressure on Lions QB Jon Kitna last week (9 sacks, 3 fumbles and an interception) last week that the Bears will probably attempt the same strategy. Bears will attempt to get pressure from a defensive line that is also banged up. DTs Tommie Harris and Darrin Walker along with DE Adewale Ogunleye all are Questionable to play. The Lions saw how successful the Dallas Cowboys were on Monday Night throwing against the Bears. Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz will
have Kitna throwing a lot to WRs Roy Williams, Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald. Bears defense, led by LB Brian Urlacher, is 12th in the NFL defensing the rush will not be too concerned with the Lions 29th ranked rushing attack. Urlacher’s Linebacking crew will drop deep into pass coverage to disrupt the Lions patterns and timing. RB Kevin Jones is not ready to participate full time coming back from the Lisfranc fracture he suffered last year. Lions RB Tatum Bell will get most of the carries for the Lions rushing game. Look for Jones to be used for 7 to 12 plays. Bell also has to be accounted for by the Bears defense out of the backfield on passes.
- Bears Offense vs Lions Offense
Through 3 games the Bears have been a dismal offensive team. They are ranked 30th overall including 30th passing and 26th rushing. Lions defensive stats are as bad as the Bears are offensively, they come in at 30th overall, 23rd defending the run and 31st against the pass. Look for the Bears to again borrow from what the Eagles used so
successfully last week. Max protect the new QB Brian Griese with only 2 receivers in the pattern to allow Griese to have all day to locate either of the Wideouts, Muhsin Muhammad and Bernard Berrian that could be wide open against the poor defensive backfield the Lions employ. Griese will also probably try deep passes as the Lions surrendered many long gains trying to stop the pass last week. Chicago will mix in some screens and play action passes as the Lions have been porous trying stop each of those through the NFL’s first 3 games. Detroit plans to get pressure on Griese with a strong defensive front including DE Dewanye White, DT’s Shaun Rogers and Cory Redding.

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger thinks this will be one of those typicall Lions - Bears games, where the team that has the ball last will win the game with a Field Goal in the last few seconds. I recommended yesterday for all you ‘players’ to stay away from wagering any of your hard earned money on this game. I hope you took my advice. With all that being said I am thinking the Lions with their home crowd behind them will squeak out a narrow victory and then start getting ready to play at Washington next week.
Make sure you go over to Chicago Bears and see Winnie’s game preview.
