  • NFL Power Rankings for Week 4

The Detroit Lions are moving down the NFL Power Rankings by the entities that do the Weekly NFL Power Rankings. Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger is providing this NFL Power Rankings post as a regular weekly feature during the NFL Regular Season. I am using the same 5 NFL Power Rankings sites each week. The 5 are:

  1. Fox Sports NFL Power Rankings
  2. ESPN NFL Power Rankings
  3. Cold Hard Football Facts NFL Power Rankings
  4. CBS Sportsline Power Rankings
  5. Peter King Monday Morning QB - SI

Peter Schrager dropped the Lions down to 22nd this week having them fall 3 places from week 3 NFL Power Rankings. He thought the defensive backfield was pretty bad. He went on to say if they don’t win the week against the Bears you will start to hear ‘Fire Millen’ in Detroit.

The Lions defensive backfield had quietly gotten by in its first two games, facing two of the league’s worst passing attacks in Oakland and Minnesota. Sunday was a different story, though, as Donovan McNabb torched Detroit for 381 yards and four touchdowns through the air. Jon Kitna and the offense had a strong enough day, but the defense was a nightmare, giving up 56 points and a total of 536 yards. Detroit’s D will have to rebound if the Lions are to have any sort of legitimate shot at the playoffs this season. The Lions take on the defending NFC North champion Bears on Sunday. Detroit could be 2-2 after that one. If that’s the case, you may begin hearing that old familiar phrase in the Motor City. Yep, “Fire Millen.”

ESPN NFL Power rankings are developed by ESPN NFL staff writers John Clayton, Len Pasquarelli, Matt Mosley, Jeffri Chadiha and Mike Sando; Scouts Inc. Insider Jeremy Green; and ESPN.com NFL senior editor Mike McAllister.

The ESPN NFL Staff dropped the Lions to 20th this week down 2 spots from 18th in Week 3 NFL Power Rankings. They criticized coach Rod Marinelli for leaving QB Jon Kitna in the game in the 4th quarter of the rout.

Head coach Rod Marinelli said he knew it was “a risk” to keep QB Jon Kitna in the game near the end of the 56-21 loss at Philadelphia. Kitna was sacked four times on the final three possessions. There are smart risks and dumb risks. This was a dumb one.

Jonathon Comey moved the Lions down 6 spots from 13th last week to 19th in Week 4 NFL Power Rankings. He seems to indicate the Lions will be in a lot of shoot outs because while their defense is weak the offense is piling up yards. He also indicates the Lions turn the ball over a lot.

Pete Prisco had the Lions with a large fall this week in the NFL Power Rankings from 13th last week to 19th in Week 4.

Their bad defense was finally exposed. They might not give up 56 every week, but look for at least 25 every week. They are fun to watch on offense.

Peter dropped the Lions out of his Fine 15 and it appears the only way for the Lions to get back in will be to win their next 2 games, against Chicago at home and on the road against Washington. Both of those upcoming opponents are in this week’s Fine 15.

This week’s opponent the Chicago Bears have dropped a long way in all the NFL Power Rankings. The average number of spots they dropped was 9 with a high drop of 12 spots by Fox Sports NFL Power Rankings.

After having Tuesday off both the Bears and Lions return to practice on Wednesday to start preparing for their matchup Sunday September 30, 2007 @ 1:00pm at Ford Field

It is just one game against a very good set of lines and a very hungry team.

You know the Lions are not that good, but it is obvious they have improved and could still be improving.

We have to hang in there.

James, thanks for the comment. I am thinking they really need to win this week. Almost to the point it is make or break for the season. I say this because they haven’t won in Washington since……..NEVER. Therefore count that one as a loss in DC and it would be difficult if they had a 3 game losing streak going into the bye week.
