The NFL Week 3 matchup was no contest from the beginning. The Philadelphia Eagles held the Detroit Lions to a 3 and out on the Lions first possession. Only 4 plays after Brian Westbrookreceiving the Lions punt the Eagles had a 7-0 lead on a 25 yard run by Brian Westbrook. Threatening to make a game of it the Lions scored on the next possession helped by a 3rd and 13 pass reception and run by Roy Williams that gained 54 yards. Two plays later the Lions were in the end zone and had tied the score on a 2 yard run by Kevin Jones. Just 10 plays later on the Eagles 2nd possession they were in the end zone again on a Brian Westbrook 5 yard run at the end of the 77 yard drive. Another three and out by the Donovan McNabbLions and then the Eagles scored another TD on a 68 yard pass from Donovan McNabb to Kevin Curtis. Once again three plays and out by the Lions with heavy QB pressure by the Eagles. The Eagles 4th drive again ends in the Lions end zone early in the 2nd period on another McNabb to Curtis hookup and its 28-7 Eagles. Lions try to get back in the game on the next Jon Kitna sackeddrive but the Eagles sacked Lions QB Jon Kitna on 2nd and 3rd down and then a short punt put the Eagles at the Lions 43. Only 1 play to get back in the end zone for the Eagles as McNabb hit a wide open Curtis for his 3rd touchdown reception and the scoreboard showed 35-7 Eagles. The Lions defense has been on the field for 5 Eagles possessions and surrendered 5 TDs. Detroit puts together a drive and makes it 35-14 on a pass from Kitna to Shaun McDonald. Philadelphia puts together a 82 yard drive down to the Lions 4 yard line when McNabb is sacked and fumbles and the Lions recover on the 9. Kitna hits Williams on a short crossing pattern and Williams outruns all the Eagles DBs for a 91 yard TD and suddenly it is 35-21 and the Lions seem to have some hope. That is until you consider the Lions defense can not stop the Eagles. Bryan Westbrook had this to say about the Lions defense:

“it was like he was playing against a Pop Warner team.”

The Eagles got right back at it with an 89 yard drive topped off by a Brian Westbrook 43 yard TD on a screen pass. He broke at least 3 tackles, on the play, before running untouched into the end zone. Eagles 42-21 and game over. One last drive for the Lions before the half ends when Jon Kitna throws an interception in the Eagles end zone. If not for the Eagles and Lions turnover near the end zones we could have had a 49-28 game at half. Instead the Eagles have to be content only leading 42-21 over the Lions.

The 2nd half saw 2 more Eagles TDs. Correll Buckhalter on a 1 yard run and Tony Hunt on a 1 yard run. The Lions offense suffered relentless defensive pressure from the Eagles resulting in 9 sacks for the game and 3 forced fumbles with the Eagles recovering 2 of the them. Final score Eagles 56 Lions 21.

The Lions now start to prepare for a date with the Chicago Bears on Sunday September 30th, 2007 @ 1:00 pm at Ford Field in Detroit. Check out my ContentQuake colleague Winnie’s Chicago Bears blog and see what great Chicago Bear insight is provided.

I hope you had a few of these players in your Fantasy lineup this week. Even the losing team put together some impressive offensive stats. Starting QBs combined for 827 yards passing and 6 TDs. A wide receiver on each team had over 200 yards receiving and 4 TDs combined. An Eagle running back had over 100 yards rushing with 2 TDs and over 100 yards receiving with another TD.

Eagles:

Passing -QB Donovan McNabb 21 for 26 for 381 yards and 4 TDs QB Rating 158.3
Receiving - WR Kevin Curtis 11 catches for 221 yards and 3 TDs 20.1 yards per catch
                   - RB Brian Westbrook 5 catches for 111 yards and 1 TD 22.2 yards per catch
Rushing - RB Brian Westbrook 14 carries 110 yards 2 TDs 7.9 per carry

Lions:

Passing -
QB Jon Kitna 29 for 45 for 446 yards and 2 TDs QB Rating 100.5

At one point McNabb completed 18 pass attempts in a row and most of the time the receiver was wide open. The Eagles defense did give up a lot of yards but did register 9 sacks for a loss of 53 yards. Philadelphia also recovered 2 fumbles and had 1 interception. The Lions defense did register 3 sacks but only 1 against McNabb and did recover 2 fumbles.
