- Detroit Lions fall to 2-1 after Philadelphia Eagles win Laugher 56-21
It would be easy to borrow from Denny Green and say ‘The Lions are who we thought they were’. But I won’t. To me this was an easy outcome to foresee. All week I provided posts that pointed out how everything was aligning for an Eagles victory. But your ‘Lions Eyes’ blogger still held out hope that somehow the Lions would overcome all the obstacles and pull out a win and move up in the NFL standings. But then I saw on the Fox NFL Sunday pre-game show that Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson and even Frank Caliendo picked the Lions to go into Philadelphia and beat the Eagles. Then to top it off the trio of experts were asked by host Curt Menefee which of the current surprise 2-0 teams in the NFL would keep it going and make the NFL playoffs. They all said the Lions. I am going to borrow from Jim Mora……’Playoffs!!!!, Playoffs!!!!! are you kidding me…..’
As the game unfolded I was reminded of my youth watching a Charlie Brown special. The Charlie Brown All-Stars were walking off the field after another losing effort and Linus said something like: ‘I really thought we had a chance to win the game……..then the game started’. That is how I felt yesterday when I held out hope, until before I knew it the game had started and the Lions were behind 35-7. Â
The Lions started the game on offense with a sack on 1st down and then 2 incompletions with heavy pressure from the Eagles. Philadelphia scored with a 4 play 56 yard drive on their 1st possession. On the Lions 2nd possession the Lions made me think they still had a chance. After getting a long run after a short completion to Roy Williams on 3rd and 13, went on to  score a TD and the game was tied. That was it for the Lions. The Eagles scored on their next 4 possessions and would have made it the next 5 possessions but for a fumble on the Lions 10. So the Eagles on their 1st 5 possessions ended up in the end zone and led 35 - 7.
The Lions were hurt by some injuries during the game, most notable to wide receiver
Calvin Johnson and two starting offensive lineman. The Eagles had pressure on Lions QB Jon Kitna throughout the game and ended with 9 sacks and many hurries and knockdowns. Kitna fumbled 3 times losing 2 of them. He also threw an interception in the end zone for the 3rd straight week after a long drive that would have cut the lead to 14 at the half. The Eagles got great performances from QB Donovan McNabb, RB Brian Westbrook and WR Kevin Curtis.
Lion Coach Rod Marinelli on the post game show said that they will watch the film to figure out what needs to be corrected and go back to work. He said he has to figure out how to prepare the team better to go on the road and be ready to play.
The game was reminiscent of the 1995 Playoff game when the Eagles dominated the Lions 58-37. I am sure the NFL Power Rankings will reflect that the Lions are who they thought they were. Probably the Lions will be dropped significantly this week. Check back on Wednesday in this spot to see where they are ranked. Tomorrow I will have a complete recap with all the stats etc… on the NFL Week 3 horror for the Lions. NFL Week 4 starts now with the Lions getting ready for a visit from the Chicago Bears who fell to 1-2 last night and seem to be dealing with a Super Bowl hangover as have the recent Super Bowl Losers.
One final thing: I bet the Eagles are happy they don’t have to wear those 1933 uniforms very often.

Right on Mike. We’ve been through this too many times with this team. I picked up on all the Fox boys talk about the Lions and I wanted to record that segment and send it back to them in week 10, when we are discussing which player to draft with the first pick again.
Graham, thanks for the comment. Hope you check back often. I just hope this is not the start of another losing spiral. They are getting hammered on the sports talk shows out of Detroit. WDFN played the Alanis Morissette Isn’t it Moronic (the Lions ineptness parody) a lot yesterday. Last week the callers were ‘they are going to the playoffs’ yesterday it was ‘they suck’ and the ‘Tampa Two defense is worse then the West Coast offense that Millen forced on them. And now Marinelli is forcing the Tampa Two on them and it is horrible’ per the callers.
