McCown to Start for Raiders – Sources

  • McCown to Start for Raiders – Sources

Josh McCown, ex-Detroit Lion QB, has reportedly been picked by Oakland Raider coach Lane Kiffin to start at quarterback when the Detroit Lions face the Raiders in the NFL Kickoff weekend matchup.

Coach Lane Kiffin didn’t make the announcement, but a person close to McCown and another person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that McCown received the nod over Daunte Culpepper.

“I don’t have any information for you on that,” Kiffin said. “Obviously, I know, but . . .”

Kiffin cited Sunday’s opponent as part of the reason for his secrecy. By holding off, he reasoned, the Lions must prepare for both Culpepper and McCown.

Detroit Lions coach Rod Marinelli indicated in the same story that it is no big deal that a starter was not officially named.

“Really, it doesn’t (matter) in a certain way,” Marinelli said in a conference call with Bay Area media Wednesday. “Why I say that is, both are very good veteran players. Both are right-handed, both can run the boot, both move around very well, both have great arms, they’re savvy veterans. So, you prepare for one, you prepare for both.”

Your ‘Lion Eyes’ blogger just can’t help thinking back to last Thanksgiving when ex-Lion QB Joey ‘Blue Skies’ Harrington came into Ford Field and had a great day, with a 107 QB rating, leading the Miami Dolphins to an ‘upset’ of the Lions 27-10. Here is hoping that another ex-Lion QB doesn’t achieve the same results.

Marinelli and Lions QB Jon Kitna were part of the Media Conference call on Wednesday. I have included links below so you can listen to their comments.
